LOST IN TRANSLATION
Robin Schwalb
New York, New York
1995

Commercially available, photo silk-screened, dyed, and discharge dyed cottons, which were then stenciled.
Machine pieced, hand appliquéd, and hand quilted. A quilted noren.
75 x 55 inches

Robin Schwalb describes this piece as: "An attempt to describe an extraordinary event that I experienced while looking out a jet window at the sunrise. The story unfolds, one letter per 2" block, across the whole surface. Alas, the text fails to adequately explain what happened, the piece hardly resembles the beauty of the scene, and the Japanese ideogram ('sun' or 'day') is apparently not quite the right one, either: truly, the whole thing is lost in translation!"
