The Source for Contemporary Art Quilts, Exhibitions & Appraisals

This charming patriotic appliqué was made by a group of friends and includes a wide variety of symbols of summer and the American way of life—Union (and one Confederate) flags and shields, George Washington on horseback and in silhouette, a spread-winged eagle, Uncle Sam, the Liberty Bell, hearts, an Indian chief, a parade drum, a sailboat, a slice of watermelon, and even a pair of red sneakers. T he gold stars in the inner border and at the corners of the running lattice strips add to the quilt's exuberant Fourth-of-July feeling. Many of the blocks are signed and/or include handwritten verses and sayings.
