John Lefelhocz comments: "I made this work for the bicentennial of the the state of Ohio in 2003. Much of my enjoyment of Ohio is centered around riding my bicycle throughout the quiet country roads near my home. I created an energy/candy bar of my own design and gridded them into an image of hills and farmland. The state bird, the cardinal, is featured throughout this piece with quotes by famous Ohioans on their wings."
Ohio Star is a simple and popular traditional pieced quilt block that has been in use since the mid 1800s. As the barred rows of Ohio Star blocks at the top and bottom of this quilt make clear, the pattern is made up of nine alternating solid and quarter-cut triangle squares that form an eight-pointed star design.
