The Source for Contemporary Art Quilts, Exhibitions & Appraisals

Katherine Knauer comments: "This quilt was made early in the AIDS epidemic, and I remember checking the newspaper each day to see what the news story about the virus would be. For the life-sized skeleton appliquéd to the quilt, I omitted the top of the skull as I didn't want the rictus grin of a skeleton to mock the grim diagnosis.

"The colors of this quilt—black plus primaries—were influenced by he work of the Memphis Design Group, a group of Italian furniture designers interested in moving away from Bauhaus-style minimalism and adding a vibrant and eccentric sense of humor to living spaces. The group was created in the early 1980s and disbanded in 1988, but it influenced furniture, decorative arts, and what we wore in the 1980s."
