Katherine Knauer comments: "Solar City II is one of Elements/ Environment, a series of quilts dealing with environmental concerns. Each quilt focuses on one of the four elements–Earth, Air, Fire or Water –that were once thought to comprise all of the earth, and on how those elements relate to current concerns about environmental degradation.
"In this fire-themed quilt, ten original fabric prints are collaged together to illustrate a futuristic vision of a city run on solar power. Some of the designs are solar panels on rooftops, electrical symbols, energy-saver light bulbs which suggest an optimistic vision of the future. Bright yellow taxis turn into sunflower petals, and the veins of the leaves become a city street map with street names such as Recycle Road, Sunshine Street, and Clean Air Avenue.
"The concept for this quilt is the same as for Solar City, but I wanted to make a quilt in which 100% of the fabrics were my own design. The batting in this quilt is a very stiff, heavy felt making it more of a 'wall hanging' and not usable as a bed quilt like most of my large quilts are."
