Broken Star is a traditional pattern that was often worked by Amish women in the mid West. Katherine Knauer comments: "This may seem to be an unusual mash-up of cultural references: an Amish quilt pattern and a Mexican Day of the Dead skeleton, but it seemed appropriate to borrow from two highly religious cultures for a depiction of eternal life. Spiraling around an embroidered cross in the center, the life spark trails off the larger 'parent' skeleton giving its energy to the 'baby' skeleton. And so on and so on and…"
