Katherine Knauer comments: "Fracked is part of Elements/ Environment, a series of quilts dealing with environmental concerns. Each quilt focuses on one of the four elements–Earth, Air, Fire or Water –that were once thought to comprise all of the earth, and on how those elements relate to current concerns about environmental degradation. Hydraulic fracturing, or 'fracking' is a way of extracting natural gas from rock using high pressure water drilling. In this earth-themed quilt, the various fabrics representing rock strata are penetrated by an enormous appliquéd “fractaled” drill that I digitally designed and printed. Then the entire surface was overprinted with black flowers bordered in gold (to suggest dead nature bordered in greed) and quilted through a netting of crocheted gold thread."
