CONFLICT
Katherine Knauer
New York, New York
1988
Commercially printed fabrics; hand appliquéd and hand quilted
85 x 88 inches (h x w)
Katherine Knauer comments: "Of all my work, this is the one quilt where I can’t find any humor. I started out trying to represent a variety of antagonists in one single quilt: male versus female (represented by pink and blue), rural versus urban, technology versus nature, (represented by commercially printed fabrics), but the result was overwhelmingly a comment on racial strife. This quilt was made shortly after the time of the Howard Beach Case in 1986, when there were protests and actions throughout New York City."
