BORDER WARS
Katherine Knauer
New York, New York
1985
Cottons, paints, beads. Stenciled, airbrushed, hand and machine quilted, embroidered, and beaded.
84 x 84 inches
A traditional central medallion composition with four borders that Knauer has punningly filled with warring figures. She comments: "Read from the outer band into the center, the story is as follows. First, one can see an argument taking place across a boundary; in the second band, the parties have taken up arms; in the third, they are engaged in combat which leads to their deaths, depicted in the fourth band. The angel in the center observes the perpetual folly of mortals."
