Machine sewn cottons
84 x 74 inches

Joe Cunningham explains this stitched depiction of a tree in front of a brick building: "1871 is my attempt to create a contemporary all-white quilt. It is all robotically machine sewn. When I learned there were computerized quilting machines, I started thinking about what you could do with them. This quilt took me seven years from start to finish, learning various software programs, how to use a digital pen for drawing, how to edit and convert drawings, and so on. Eventually, I drew 130 7.5" blocks and fed them into a computerized long arm machine in rows of 10. It was an enormous project, and I hope to get a machine with which to do more."
