Barred Island is a small unspoiled Maine island that is part of the Barred Island Nature Preserve on Deer Isle. The land was originally owned by the celebrated landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed Central Park in New York, and is now owned by the Nature Conservancy. Deer Isle is the site of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, where Gayle and Duncan have taught on many occasions.
