The Source for Contemporary Art Quilts, Exhibitions & Appraisals

This free-form painted wholecloth quilt is based on an image of a Siberian tiger from a twelve-panel screen by Kano Tan'yu that was painted for the abbot's quarters in the Nanzenji Temple in Kyoto. Tan'yu (1602–1674) was the most influential painter of the Tokugawa period and one of the foremost Japanese painters of the Kano school, the longest lived and most influential school of painting in Japanese history.
