The Source for Contemporary Art Quilts, Exhibitions & Appraisals

Jane Cochran explains: War Baby was 'conceived' when a friend gave me a box of US military buttons. I had been thinking for several years how to use them. They are difficult to use anyway because of a long shank. I thought of the joy the birth of a baby could bring a soldier since I was born during WWII. My mother had given me three letters she had sent to my father as though I had written them.  My father apparently saved all the letters she wrote him. They are very touching to me but almost strange if someone does not know the story.

"I have used children's clothing in numerous quilts and wanted to do another putting gold leaf on the dress. I think some of the color and almost altar shape was inspired from my many trips to Mexico.

"The other meaning of course is that children are often killed in a war."
